Dear Friends & Supporters of the IEFTA–and to our Partners and Friends in Ethiopia,
For 9 years, The IEFTA has developed film-related talent and supported cinematic education in Ethiopia. (http://www.iefta.org/from-
addis-to-cannes/). We have established enduring ties and made wonderful friends, while marveling at the warmth, energy and creativity of local filmmakers.
Consequently, we deplore recent developments in the political and economic affairs of Ethiopia, including the newly declared state of emergency (https://www.apnews.com/
cef7e02163054746b06764395ad001 3b/Ethiopia-government- unveils-rules-for-state-of- emergency). The free movement of people and ideas has been curtailed by the current government.
It is with great sorrow that we recognize the impossibility of continuing our mission under the Global Film Expression (GFE) Initiative. We are obliged, albeit reluctantly, to suspend all activity until the situation resolves and the rights and liberties guaranteed to the great people of Ethiopia are fully restored. As we monitor the situation, we express our sincerest wishes for a peaceful and just resolution of the ongoing crisis.
To our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia–please stay safe and strong. We look forward to working together again soon.
With sadness and solidarity,
Marco A. Orsini
