The “Voices for Refugees” Conference at 2016 Cannes Film Festival held on 18th May 2016 was a well attended event highlighting this humanitarian tragedy, a topic in the forefront of news and media.
Hosted and organised by International Emerging Film Talent Association (IEFTA) in cooperation with The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and The Marché du Film, the event demonstrated and discussed ways of film to join forces with humanitarian agencies to relieve and/or help the situation.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing worldwide refugee crisis, this global humanitarian tragedy has sparked the interest of the entertainment world, with filmmakers – some refugees themselves – telling their own stories and those of affected populations. Refugee Voices in Film will explore ways that broadcasters, humanitarian agencies and filmmakers engage and portray refugees and their plight. It will also present independent filmmaking voices and look at how the worldwide entertainment community is telling and sharing refugee stories.
